Up until 1926, NHL Champions had to play the winners of the other leagues. In 1927 the NHL gained complete control over the Stanley Cup.
Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup was born shortly after March 18, 1892 when Lord Robert Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada decided there needed to be a challenge Cup for this new game of hockey. So he purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across in 1893; appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup. And the rest was history.
