This team was made up of collegiate and amateur players which was in complete contrast to Team USSR’s pro style players which played together for years. The “Miracle on Ice” is regarded as one of the greatest moments in American sports.
Voted by Sports Illustrated as the greatest sports moment in the twentieth century and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) chose the Miracle on Ice as the number-one international hockey story of the 20th century.
Miracle on Ice was a single game event in which Team USA beat Team USSR in round robin play by a (4 to 3) score and where Play by Play announcer Al Michaels coined the famous phrase at the conclusion of the game “Do you believe in Miracles! Yes.” After this win Team USA went on to beat Finland in their final game and won the gold medal. Finland finished in (4th).
